Sixty depressed people with low magnesium levels participated in a randomized placebo-controlled trial. The results showed the taking 500 mg magnesium oxide daily for 8 weeks improved magnesium status and reduce depression. The researchers conclude “assessment of the magnesium serum and resolving this deficiency positively influence the treatment of depressed patients”.
In a study of 80 Taiwanese postnatal women with poor sleep quality, those who drank chamomile tea for a period of 2 weeks had significantly lower scores of sleep inefficiency and symptoms of depression. The authors conclude ‘Chamomile tea may be recommended to postpartum women as a supplementary approach to alleviating depression and sleep quality problems’.
